No Cold Water in the Bathroom?

Taking a cold shower seems like the worst way to start the morning. Unless you turn the handle only to discover theres no cold water at all. Have you been forced to skip the shower or sink in your bathroom due to a lack of cold water? Get your plumbing system back on track with help from the experts at Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Our team of licensed plumbers are excited to offer local businesses and homeowners quality solutions to their problematic pipes, and we want to do the same for you. Here are a few tips that can help you diagnose and fix your cold-water troubles.

Shut-Off Valve

First, check the shut off valve that regulates the flow of water into your bathroom. Theres a chance that the valve may have been turned while someone was performing a repair or testing out the plumbing system. Locate the appropriate valve and make sure the two knobs are turned correctly. Then, test to be sure the problem is solved. Otherwise, move on to more troubleshooting steps.

Shower Cartridge

If your sink is getting cold water, but not your shower, then the issue could be with your shower cartridge. This component helps to regulate water pressure and the ratio of hot and cold water pouring from your showerhead. Eventually, the cartridge can become deteriorated from long term exposure to minerals that cause buildup and corrosion. Replace the cartridge and test it out to see if the cold water has returned.

Frozen Pipes

Is it winter? Sometimes, freezing temperatures will solidify the liquid in your fresh water supply. The warmth of the water flowing from the hot water heater may be less vulnerable to freezing, and therefore still work. If you suspect this is the reason for your issue, exercise caution. Frozen pipes can easily tear or burst, causing a flood. Turn the shut off valve to your home off, and work on finding the area where the icy water is located. You may need to get help from a plumber to ensure the water is properly thawed without damaging your pipes. You may also be able to avoid this problem in the future by insulating your plumbing system during the fall and winter.

Major Clog

Have you already tried the other solutions, and the outdoor temperature is a perfect 70 degrees? Then you could have a large clog blocking the cold water from coming through the line. Removing the clog or repairing the pipe if necessary should get the cold water flowing freely again in no time.
