Reduce Your Water Bill - Replace Your Toilet Flapper

A toilet flapper is a small rubber stopper located at the base of the toilet tank which allows water from the tank to flow into the bowl when you flush. This component closes off the flush valve and is attached to the flush lever by a chain.

When the toilet is flushed, the flush lever lifts the chain, which opens the flapper to create flushing action. After the flushing action, the toilet flapper resumes its former position and seals off the drain hole to keep water in the tank.

This component not only allows for a proper flush; it also helps you save water by preventing the water in the tank from flowing into the bowl. However, the toilet flapper is one of the common places where toilet leaks happen.

Although a toilet flapper is built to last for many years, it will eventually fail due to normal wear and tear, mineral buildup, accumulation of mold, and mildew, among many other causes. A deteriorating flapper valve won't close off the drain hole valve properly, thereby resulting in leakage. Moreover, a constantly running toilet can be annoying.

If left unrepaired, a faulty toilet flapper can cost you hundreds of dollars a year in increased water bills. Depending on the extent of the leak, a malfunctioning toilet flapper can waste up to 200 gallons of water a day. To avoid putting a dent in your wallet, you should replace your toilet flapper when it begins to fail.

Signs You Need to Replace Your Toilet Flapper

  • Your toilet is constantly running
  • Water around the base of the toilet
  • Your toilet flushes on its own
  • Your toilet wont flush or flushes very little

If you notice these warning signs of a faulty toilet flapper, call a reputable plumber to inspect your toilet and make the necessary repairs.

Ignoring signs of a damaged toilet flapper will only lead to leaks, water waste, water damage around the base of the toilet, mold growth, and costly toilet replacement. Replacing a faulty toilet flapper helps you reduce your water bill and keeps your toilet in good working order.

At Mr. Rooter Plumbing, we are always ready to help you with all of your toilet repair needs. Whether youre dealing with a bad toilet flapper that is causing your toilet to flush poorly or a constantly running toilet, we can provide you with a lasting solution.
