Unclog a Garage Floor Drain

What causes garage floor drain clog and what supplies do you need to unclog the drain.

Blocked sewer lines are the most prominent reasons why your garage floor drain is constantly blocked. The drain located at the lowest point of the home is usually flooded first. The gurgling tub drain and toilets that bubbles when you turn on the faucet, are also symptoms of blocked sewer lines.

Frozen drain pipes are also common reasons why your garage flood drain is clogged. The ice melting from the pipe are the reasons why garage floor drains get clogged especially in the early hours of the morning. In this case, you will need a certified plumber to excavate and insulate your pipe to prevent further freezing- the repeated freezing and thawing of pipes can eventually lead to the pipe bursting. Burst pipes may also allow dirt to enter your pipe and eventually the water flowing into your home.

Pipe crystallization through the passage of urine, soaps, sugary drinks, can cause a dry drain to become clogged especially when such substances build up and become crystallized.

The materials you will need to unclog your garage floor drain are; Flashlight, bucket, hand gloves, plunger along with petroleum jelly, baking soda, white vinegar, boiling water, old rags, and plumbers snake. Unclogging your garage floor drain

With the gloves in your hand, the first thing you want to do is to remove all debris, into a bucket from the floor drain. The next step is to plunge the drain and see if you can move the blockage. Create a tight seal by applying petroleum jelly to the rim and then thrust the plunger forcefully against the drain opening multiple times, then pour water through the drain to see if it is unclogged.

If the clog is tougher, you can apply a cup of baking soda with a cup of white vinegar, along with boiling water. First, you should pour the boiling water and let it sit in the drain for about 10 minutes, then pour the baking soda into the drain, followed by the white vinegar, then let everything fizz for about 10 minutes before you flush it with 2 cups of boiling water.

The final step is to break out the plumbers snake by rotating the cable when you insert the plumbers snake. Make sure you push and twist the cable if you are faced with any resistance, then make use of an old rag to pull the cable down, then repeat the process if necessary.
