Ways to Manually Flush a Toilet

Here are some tips on how to manually flush the toilet, so a proper repair can be performed.

Rubber Flapper

Once the lid is removed, you should be able to see a rubber flapper attached to a chain. This piece is essential, and your toilet cannot flush properly if it is functioning incorrectly. If you notice the chain has become disconnected from the handle arm, you will need to reattach the end of the chain to the small hook on the handle and then pull the flapper up. This should cause the toilet to flush. If this doesnt work, then the flapper may not be sitting on top of the opening found at the bottom of the tank. Adjust it if necessary. If the chain has been broken or if the flapper is showing signs of physical damage or deterioration, then you may need a replacement part.

Add Water to the Toilet Bowl

You should be able to force your toilet to flush by slowly pouring 3 to 5 gallons of water into the bowl. Grab a mop bucket or a similar sized container and carefully dump the water into it. Of course, if this does not trigger a flush, be careful not to overflow the bowl or you will end up with a big mess.

Add Water to the Tank

If your flushing issue is caused by a lack of water in the tank, then you may be able to manually flush the toilet by pouring water directly into the tank. Take care to fill the tank to the water line.
