Why is My Dishwasher Leaking?

Have you stopped using your dishwasher because it constantly leaks? At Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Pittsburgh, we offer premium commercial and residential plumbing services including dishwasher installation, repair and replacement in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and surrounding neighborhoods. If you have been struggling with a leaky dishwasher, read below to find out the most common reasons for the issue, so you can get back to enjoying your appliance.

Dysfunctional Door Latch

A loose door latch can allow water to seep out, since it may prevent the door from closing all the way during the wash cycle. If your dishwasher latch feels loose or isnt performing correctly, then installing a new latch should return your dishwasher to normal.

Using the Wrong Detergent

Is it possible that you or someone in your household used laundry detergent or dish soap? If so, then the excess bubbles may have forced water and soap out of the door. Make sure that everyone in the home understands which product is the correct detergent for the dishwasher.

Float Switch Issues

The float switch is designed to help your dishwasher avoid overflowing. If the float switch isnt working correctly, then it may quickly fill up with too much water. Replacing the faulty switch should restore the usability of your appliance.

Drainage Problem

Could it be that your dishwasher is being flooded because of a backup? Drainage issues are most often caused by a clog in the dishwasher tub or drain line. Removing the clog should fix the problem. However, if you suffer from chronic clogs that effect other areas of your plumbing system, then a professional drain cleaning or sewer line repair may be required.

Sitting on an Unlevel Surface

Your dishwasher must be level in order to function properly. However, not everyones floor is perfectly even, especially in older homes. Use a carpenters level to check the angle of the bottom rail. You may need to make adjustments in order to ensure that your appliances are sitting on a level surface.

Leaking Gasket or Pump Seal

If the water is pooling in front of the dishwasher on the floor, then a faulty door gasket may be to blame. If the water is dripping from the motor or pump housing, then a leaking pump seal may be the culprit. Replacing the faulty door gasket or rubber pump seal should fix the issue.

Bad Valve Connection or Cracked Hose

Another common cause of leaks in dishwashers is a poor valve connection or damaged hoses. A proper inspection can help you determine if this is the case. Repairing the valve or replacing the old hose should help your dishwasher run like new. If however, your unit has become severely damaged or corroded, you may need to invest in a replacement.
