Why is My Garbage Disposal Smelly?

You want your kitchen to smell good always but the foul odor emanating from your kitchen drain sink can cut short the fun. You need to learn about the reasons why the garbage disposal smells so bad and ways to prevent such odor. Contact Mr. Rooter Plumbing as soon as you notice any offensive odor emanating from the garbage disposal system.

Reasons why your garbage disposal smells badly

Your kitchen sink may stink because of the decomposing food and grease. The rotten articles left behind when disposing of food down the drain can get stuck in pipes and become rotten, thus giving off a foul smell. Mold and bacteria can also cause the garbage disposal foul smell. While the top area of the rubber strainer flange may appear clean, the warm and moist underside may provide a conducive environment for bacteria and mold to grow. Most garbage disposals are full of bacteria and mold, and they may be responsible for the stinking garbage disposal.

Sewer gases can also cause garbage disposals rotten smell. In most efficiently installed sinks, there are traps that hold water and also prevent the rising of the sewer gases from the drain. There are certain problems that may prevent this trap from working efficiently, these include a partial or full blockage of the drain vent, leakages in the vent, or a trap that has become dried. Any of these problems can cause sewer gases to leak into the kitchen.

Ways of preventing smelly garbage disposal in your home

You can follow these simple tips and ideas to stop smelly garbage disposal in your home. For instance, you need to ensure that you run water (preferably cold water) when you operate the garbage disposal, in order to prevent over-heating. You may also want to pass some ice cubes along with fresh lemon peels down the kitchen drain the ice cubes will help eliminate gunk from the blades, while the lemon peel will create some fresh citrus scent behind.

Make sure you run your garbage disposal for about 5 seconds once the grinding noise level is out. Do not stop the blades prematurely, otherwise, food particles will be left behind and they can become rotten to produce a foul smell. Dont expect the garbage disposal to dispose of all of your kitchen waste, make sure you place inorganic wastes such as food debris and cooking oil and grease inside a thrash. Do not forget to put items such as starchy food particles, egg shells, celery stalk and potato peels inside a trash and dispose of them separately.

If the smell is emanating from the sink, and the drains are becoming sluggish, you may want to check possible blockage of the vent- make sure you clear all the debris clogging the vent to eliminate such odor.

If after taking all these steps you still notice a foul smell from your waste disposal garbage, you need to ensure that you contact Mr. Rooter Plumbing as soon as possible. We will dispatch our professional plumber to come and rescue the situation as soon as possible.
