Water shutoff valves are a vital component of your homes plumbing system. They allow you to quickly turn the water supply off and on when its time for repairs, new installations or maintenance tasks. However, despite their helpfulness, shutoff valves arent free of issues altogether. At Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Pittsburgh, we strive to provide the highest quality residential and commercial services for our local clients. Are you a homeowner that likes being prepared for anything? Here are some common issues with supply shut off valves and what you can do to solve them.
Outdated Saddle Valves
In older homes, it is common to still find T shaped saddle valves. Unfortunately, the old-fashioned hardware is notorious for severe leaking, which can ultimately lead to water damage, mold growth and other issues. Avoid unnecessary repairs and renovations by replacing saddle valves with modern alternatives as quickly as you can.
Drips and Leaks
Homeowners who are performing time consuming renovations or plumbing tasks will need to leave the water supply off for a while. Some people find themselves struggling with a drippy valve once they turn it back on. In most cases, simply tightening the nut will return things to normal. If this doesnt solve the problem, you may be dealing with a broken or deteriorated valve and will need to replace it altogether. If the valve in question is your main shut off valve, you will need to contact your local water utility company to shut off the main water supply before you attempt to replace it. Its recommended that you hire a professional plumber for a main shut off valve replacement.
Burst Pipes
Owners of RVs and vacation homes will normally turn off their water supply during the winter. Since they are less likely to visit their lake home, or take a road trip in their fifth wheel, it makes since to avoid the risk of indoor flooding. Sometimes, there water is left in the pipe between the shutoff valve and spigot. This small amount of liquid can still freeze, creating enough air pressure inside the pipe to cause a fracture. While the burst pipe wont cause a lot of water damage initially, property owners who are unaware of the broken pipe may turn the water supply back on and quickly flood the room with water. To avoid this, always check your pipes, valves and fixtures carefully to ensure that they are in quality condition before restoring the water supply.
