Which Kind of Pipes Will Work Best for Your Project?

Are you embarking on a new plumbing project? Is your construction team in the design phase of building a new home or commercial property? Then youre probably wondering what kind of plumbing materials should be used to accomplish your goals. At Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Pittsburgh, PA, we proudly provide dependable residential and commercial plumbing services for local clients. We understand the importance of choosing the right pipes for your plumbing system. Here is some information that can help you make the best decision for your specific needs.

Galvanized Steel

Galvanized steel is a metal made from zinc coated iron, which helps to reduce rust and corrosion. They were once the primary choice for home builders because of its rust resistance and strength. However, as they age, deterioration and rust does become a factor, and so they are often used only for grey water or non-potable water transport in modern plumbing.

Copper

Copper has long been a favorite of property owners because it is corrosion resistant and extremely lightweight when compared to iron or steel. Copper can also be more expensive than some of todays options, and repairs require soldering. Despite these minor inconveniences, many homeowners prefer to use copper because of its longevity and reliability. They are primarily used to deliver hot and cold water to faucets throughout the home.

PEX

PEX pipes are becoming extremely popular for homeowners, construction companies and local plumbers in Pittsburgh. They are made from an incredibly flexible material, which makes it easy to install throughout the home, even in tight corners and areas that are difficult to maneuver. They are also a good option for those living in colder climates, because they contract and expand less than conventional metal pipes. PEX can be used for almost any plumbing applications, but it should never be connected directly to a boiler or hot water heater.

PVC

Polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, is one of the most commonly used pipe materials in the world. PVC is very cost effective, and easy to cut, making repairs, replacements or new installations fast and simple. Also, there is no reason to worry about rust or corrosion, since it is made from synthetic materials, not metal. It is also extremely durable, yet very lightweight, so construction requires less labor. PVC is great for a variety of plumbing needs however PVC shouldnt be used for hot water, drinking water or in areas where the pipe will be exposed to direct sunlight.

CPVC

CPVC is manufactured similarly to conventional PVC but contains additional chlorine for extra durability. This upgrade allows the pipes to be used for hot water delivery and drinking water.
